The school is a social and learning agent that provides the environment upon which a child may be formally educated in order to attain educational goals. School is one of the institutions that is responsible for the development and training of the mind and skill of man. School is also for the preparation of man for the challenges and responsibilities in the society at large. However, Schools are located variously, some in the urban while others are in the rural areas. It is observed that schools located in the urban areas tend to have more facilities, manpower, government attention, etc. as against those located in the rural areas.
School location refers to the particular place, in relation to other areas in the physical environment (rural or urban), where the school is sited. In Nigeria, rural life is uniform, homogenous and less complex than that of urban centers, with cultural diversity, which often is suspected to affect students’ academic achievement. This is because urban centers are better favored with respect to distribution of social amenities such as pipe borne water, electricity, healthcare facilities while the rural areas are less favored. This is also true in the distribution of educational facilities and teachers. These prevailing conditions imply that learning opportunities in Nigerian schools differ from school to school. It would appear therefore that students in Nigerian urban schools have more educational opportunities than their counterparts in rural schools have. In otherwise, poor academic achievement is an achievement that is adjudged by the examiners as falling below an expected standard. It is when a student performance is below his actual ability. It could be as a result of several factors such as poor teaching, psychological factors, unpreparedness on the part of the students, poor learning environment, location of schools and the evaluation process. School environment can influce students performance in terminal examination and their undergraduate research projects and seminars. Also several factors have shown to have a great influence on the academic performance of students; factors such as attitude of students and teachers, study habit, teachers’ qualification, teaching methods, school environment, government policy, school location as well as family types have been identified in several studies as factors influencing students’ academic achievement.
SCHOOL LOCATION
School location refers to where a given school is situated. It could be in an urban or rural area. School location is a particular place in relation to other areas in the physical environment (rural or urban), where the school is sited. Human beings, have unlimited capacity to learn, but many however be limited by the behavior patterns and facilities that the immediate environment offers.
In Nigeria for instance, rural life is uniform, homogenous and less complex than that of urban centers, with cultural diversity, which often is suspected to affect students’ academic achievement.
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
Academic achievement or academic performance is the extent to which a student, teacher or institution has attained their short or long-term educational goals. Completion of educational benchmarks such as secondary school diplomas and bachelor's degrees represent academic achievement.
Academic performance is the measurement of student achievement across various academic subjects. Teachers and education officials typically measure achievement using classroom performance, graduation rates and results from standardized tests.
The performance is referred to as the capacity or ability to achieve a desired result. In other words, the word involves a complete measurement of education process as well as outcome. Performance or achievement is a function of so many factors such as students’ interest, how instructions are passed to the learners, and availability of relevant instructional materials or the location of the school.
Academic success is important because it is strongly linked to the positive outcomes we value. Academic success is also important because working people will need higher levels of education to tackle the technologically demanding occupations of the future. Now a day you need a post-secondary education in order to get a job.
Academic performance of students is a key feature in education. It is considered to be the centre around which the whole education system revolves. Academic performance of students determines the success or failure of any academic institution. Academic performances of students have a direct impact on the socio-economic development of a country. Similarly, students’ academic performance serves as bedrock for knowledge acquisition and the development of skills.
Therefore, the top most priority of all educators is academic performance of students. Academic performance is the knowledge gained which is assessed by marks by a teacher and/or educational goals set by students and teachers to be achieved over a specific period of time.
SCHOOL LOCATION AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
School location is significant in teaching and learning process. In Nigeria for instance, rural students have shown to exhibit more learning difficulties than their urban counterparts do. However, the influence of school location influences the academic performance of students in rural and urban schools especially during external examination which showed that students in urban schools performed better with superior grades, than their rural counterparts while failure rate was higher in the rural schools.
Location here is in terms of whether the place of study or school is sited in rural or urban community. When a school is located in an area that makes it difficult for qualified teachers to reside or even give them access of learning and instructional materials, it becomes difficult to teach and impact knowledge on these students unlike their urban counterparts who have access to all kinds of teaching and learning materials as well as well trained and qualified teachers.
CONCLUSION
Academic achievement is an important parameter in measuring success in students. Observations and reports have shown that success or high academic achievement has become a Herculean task to accomplish by students in recent times. More so, school location is another factor to consider in terms of the academic performance of students.
